UFC 256: Figueiredo VS. Moreno Preview and Fight Card brought to you by MMA Chatter.
Deiveson Figueiredo is set to defend his UFC flyweight championship against Brandon Moreno a stunning 21 days after his previous defense against Alex Perez. The Brazilian, who goes by the nom de guerre “Deus da Guerra” (God of War), finished his previous challenger Perez with a first round submission. On that same night, his new challenger Brandon Moreno finished his opponent Brandon Royval also in the first round with ground-and-pound. The victors of UFC 255 are about to lock horns in the main event of UFC 256 and we are all ready for it.
In the co-main event, UFC legend Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson is set to take on the always-dangerous Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira. Ferguson is looking to bounce back after his all-out war with Justin Gaethje. The former interim lightweight champion was on a 12-fight tear previously and with a title fight against the recently retired Khabib Nurmagomedov called off, Ferguson cut weight for the night of the fight, then cut again shortly thereafter to fight the Arizona native. Whether that played a major part in the defeat or not, the wisdom of weakening yourself twice in a short time period clearly worked against him as the fight was called with a minute-20 to spare in the fifth round. Ferguson is at a crossroads of sorts, with a win putting him square in contention for a run at the 155 lbs. belt while a loss would see his stock plummet and elevate that of Oliveira. Oliveira is on a 7-fight win streak since his loss to Paul Felder at UFC 218 in 2017. If Khabib does indeed remain retired, then the winner of this bout could face the winner of the Conor McGregor-Dustin Poirier rematch set for January.
Also on the stacked main card are three more exciting fights, the first lightweight bout between Renato Moicano and Rafael Fiziev, followed by Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Kevin Holland (both previously diagnosed with COVID-19), and finally a sure-fire slugfest between icon Junior “Cigano” do Santos and Ciryl Gane. 36-year old former champion dos Santos is on a 3-fight skid having been TKO’d by Francis Ngannou, Curtis Blaydes and Jairzinho Rozenstruik. It’s all on the line for dos Santos to justify his place on the UFC roster, while up-and-comer Gane faces his toughest test in the Octagon yet. “Bon Gamin” is 20-years old and holds a 6-0 record, his last win coming a year ago against Tanner Boser at UFC Fight Night 165.
Notable matchups from the prelims include Andrea Lee vs. Gillian Robertson, Cub Swanson vs. Daniel Pineda and Mackenzie Dern vs. Virna Jandiroba. Angela Hill has pulled out of her bout with Tecia Torres due to a positive result for COVID-19, however Torres has taken to social media to wish her former opponent well and announce that the UFC is scrambling to find her a replacement opponent for the card. The early prelims showcase Chase Hooper vs. Peter Barrett. The full UFC 256: Figueiredo VS. Moreno Preview and Fight Card is listed below.
