Men’s MMA Bantamweight Rankings December 2020 Update: Current UFC champion Petr Yan sits atop the bantamweight mountain yet there are many that believe none other than Aljamain Sterling belongs there. UFC 256 was supposed to settle the issue once and for all, however a myriad of mystery illnesses have prevented “No Mercy” from defending his strap against the “Funk Master,” who is currently riding a five-win streak. Among the scalps Sterling has claimed during his run include #3 Cory Sandhagen, #7 Pedro Munhoz and Jimmie Rivera. Sandhagen himself holds only that loss to Sterling as the only blemish on a nine-fight run. He has finished #5 Marlon Moraes with a fabulous spinning wheel kick and beaten #8 Raphael Assuncao in a unanimous decision.
The rest of the 135 lb. division is open to interpretation. A resurgent Cody Garbrandt, fresh off a stunning victory over Assuncao, was halted by Covid-19 keeping him out of his bout with Moreno, may see him drop down to the 125 lb. rankings next month. Legends Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo and Dominick Cruz are all scrapping for a shot back into the top five. We should have more clarity in the division Henry Cejudo left up for grabs in a few months.
