Men’s Men’s MMA Flyweight Rankings December 2020 Update: What a year for Deiveson Figueirido. He began the year by committing the sin of missing weight for a title fight at February’s UFC Fight Night 169. After somewhat controversially knocking out Joseph Benavidez after a clash of heads, he dispatched “Joejitsu” for a second time for the UFC Flyweight title at Fight Night 172 in July , duly knocking him out with superstar brutality. Mid-November, “Deus da Guerra” ended up-and-comer Alex Perez‘s night within two minutes of the first round with textbook scrambling and a guillotine choke to boot. He has made a full villain-to-hero turn for the UFC as he ends 2020 as savior of the company’s last major PPV of the year after Piotr Yan withdrew from his main event bantamweight title bout against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 256. Figueirido stands to cement himself a serious contender for Fighter of the Year with a victory over Mexico’s “Assassin Baby” Brandon Moreno. Moreno also fought on the mid-November card, finishing Brandon Royval in quick fashion with a first-round TKO.

The rest of the division is highly-competitive and spans the major promotions. Sergio Pettis stands out with a three fight win streak (albeit with losses to Rob Font and Jussier Formiga back in 2018). His wins over the aforementioned Benavidez and Moreno remain impressive and in 2021 we will see if “The Phenom” can continue his success in Bellator. Askar Askarov is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Alexandre Pantoja at UFC Fight Night 172 at Fight Island, and his undefeated record of 12-0 could soon be put to the test against the winner of Figueirido-Moreno.
