Men’s Men’s MMA Lightweight Rankings December 2020 Update: It wasn’t surprising that Khabib Nurmagomedov beat Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 254 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. What was surprising, however, is the ease at which he seemed to do it. Sure, Gaethje gave “The Eagle” a few punishing leg kicks in the first round, but the patience and poise in which the Russian fighter took the abuse – and then subsequently delivered his own in the second round, the fluency and purpose with which he did it, was as good as good as grappling as you’ll ever see in MMA. And while an emotional retirement in the ring in respect to his father Abdulmanap and a promise in which he made to his mother would be enough to take him off the list and rankings, well, Dana White doesn’t seem to buy it. That 30-0 mark is calling in the distance in the form of a big-time UFC check against a big-time opponent, perhaps a certain Irishman. If that certain Irishman, one Conor McGregor, dispatches Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 on Jan. 23rd, well, maybe that last go-round comes to fruition. Until the UFC vacates Nurmagomedov’s belt, we will keep him in our rankings as well.

Tony Ferguson is scheduled to do battle against Charles Oliveira later this month on December 12th at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the co-main of UFC 256. “El Cucuy” had previously been on a 12-fight win streak before falling to Gaethje’s power, precision and stamina back in May at UFC 249. Oliveira meanwhile is currently riding a 7-fight win streak and the winner of this bout may find themselves in a championship fight with a dominant performance. At the time of writing, Gaethje, Ferguson, Oliveira, Poirier and McGregor are all in the mix to face or supplant Khabib as champ at 155.
