Women’s MMA Flyweight Rankings December 2020 Update: Put your hands up if you were more excited to see Valentina Shevchenko fight at UFC 255 than Deiveson Figueiredo… that isn’t a knock on the men’s flyweight champion – Valentina has earned superstar status. Her striking is next-level and after we saw her body kick on Jessica Eye to set up a perfect head kick, we couldn’t wait to see what she would do with Jennifer Maia. Well, it turns out that she out-grappled the grappler. Maia certainly won the second round against “The Bullet” but that was a mostly a moral victory, as Shevchenko tee’d off later in the fight leaving no doubt who was the best in all areas in the flyweight division. A fight against a feisty Jessica Andrade or a Lauren Murphy seems the next challenge for Shevchenko, however an outside chance at a superfight is around the corner against either Strawweight queen Weili Zhang or her octagon arch-foe the champ-champ Amanda Nunes.
Katlyn Chookagian thoroughly outclassed Cynthia Calvillo recently at UFC 255, taking all three rounds and stopping Calvillo’s ascent towards the top of the flyweight ladder. Chookagian finds herself in a tough position where she can’t hang with Shevchenko but then dominates the rest of the division. Bellator champ Ilima-Lei Macfarlane has rattled off four straight championship defenses and looks to defend her belt on December 10th against Juliana Velasquez at Bellator 254. Macfarlane’s long-time friend Liz Carmouche has made waves with her debut in the California-based promotion, submitting DeAnna Bennett with a rear-naked choke midway through the third period.
December 5th sees Taila Santos and Montana de la Rosa compete at UFC on ESPN 19, with a dominant performance by either setting the stage for another high-profile flyweight bout in 2021.
